A Strut and A Stroll down the Catwalk: A Sit Down with Beep Beep

When did you realize that you wanted to perform as a drag queen?

I realized at about 16 that I wanted to do drag when I watch Rupaul’s Drag Race for the first time! I just felt so connected to what everyone was doing on that show and knew I wanted to give it a shot, I started when I moved to Iowa City when I was 21!

Do you remember when your first performance was or what song it was?

My first performance ever was Just A Girl by No Doubt and I had never walked in the boots that I wore for that number so I tripped over myself MANY times!

How long does it take you to get ready for a performance, and what is the fastest you’ve ever gotten in drag?

It usually takes me a good hour and a half to get into everything, including makeup, pads, tights, and outfits! The fastest time I got into full drag was when I got off work at 9:30PM and the show started at 10:30PM! Luckily I worked close to the bar at the time but it was a race against the clock for sure, somehow I managed to even finish before some of the other performers!

Have you ever had a heckler at one of your shows and how do you handle that?

At drag shows I think it's rare to have a heckler per say. I feel like you have people who are just staring at you or not interacting really, which happens a lot! I usually just tend to focus on the people who are watching and engaging!

What is the most rewarding part about being a drag queen?

Honestly getting to meet so many people and brighten up their day! I love to just make people laugh and I've had many people tell me I do that for them! I just wanna help people escape their reality for a good 3 minutes!

What would you say to a new and upcoming drag queen?

I think when new queens come in, they tend to think they are the best thing around! It’s good to have confidence but always remember you can get better! Everyone can always improve on their own craft in one way or another! Also being nice can go a long way in this industry!

What 3 songs that you haven’t created a routine for do you have plans to do?

I always try to find new dumb songs to do, or do popular songs and add a dumb twist, so I really wanna do Bad Day by Daniel Powter, Umbrella by Rihanna, and any song Lady Gaga releases!

Where can we find you at? (Any and all social media links that you want to plug! The floor is yours)

All of my social media handles are @heyitsbeep and for shows you can catch me the first and last Thursday at Studio 13 every month! The Thirsty Thursday show and the Kings of the Corridor show are two shows that I have so much fun helping cast and being in, they have just such a fun atmosphere so come on out and see them!
