How did you get your start in creating music?
I started a little later than most of my contemporaries. My middle school friend was learning the guitar and his mom bought me a bass at 14. I taught myself a lot of Nirvana songs.
What was the first song you ever wrote, and do you remember what it was about?
The first song I can remember writing was a song called Weasel in my high school band Comatose Kitty. The lyrics were about some high school drama I can't remember.
How do you get yourself in a creative mindset to write music?
Most of the time I just get in a mood and crank out a song. It usually triggers very randomly. I'm not the kind of person who sits down and decides to write a song. I need to be in the mood to do it otherwise I just noodle aimlessly.
What do you hope people who listen to your music take away from it?
I just want people to connect to my music the way I connect to music that I listen to. We live in an age where all music that exists can be searched for by any smart phone. For someone to listen to us over anything else feels pretty good.
Is there an artist that inspires you?
I can easily give you the meme answer and say Jimmy Eat World or Hawthorne Heights but one artist most people wouldn't know I listen to is Masayoshi Soken, the lead composer of Final Fantasy XIV. The man is an absolute genius and everything he adds to the game are bangers.
What is the best piece of advice you could give to someone who is nervous to start a band or write music?
Doing the things makes you better at the things. The more you practice writing and performing the better you'll get at it. If I showed you a video of Manhattan Blockade a first show it was probably garbage. You have to suck before you get kinda good.
What 3 Songs do listen to while playing Magic the Gathering?
I don't really like listening to music while playing Magic. Music and Magic use up different parts of my brain and doing one would distract me from the other. So if you're ever playing me and it's not at my house put music on it'll probably better your odds.
