One Foot In The Gutter, One Foot In The Swamp: A Sit Down with Gutter Swamp

How did each of you guys get a start in music?

Aaron started with music in elementary school playing in an orchestra. Played violin from 4th grade to 12th grade.

Jabrail got into music from the older guys in his neighborhood showing him how to play guitar and bass.

Mike- Started as a fan of classic rock from my parents. Began listening to rap as a young teen. That inspired me to start writing lyrics. Linked up with a local band to do a rap/roc colab and was bit with the bug from there.

Matt- Picked up the guitar at a young age and has been in love ever since. With that love it led to him learning how to record as well.

Bill played in a marching band in school. He eventually started doing vocals and now he's back on drums with us

Can you describe your music in a few sentences?

The best way to describe our music is fun and SWAMPY.

When you guys were creating music for Gutter Swamp at what point did you decide to add the harmonica?

It was more of just playing around as a joke. Mike brought it in and started to play (randomly because he didn’t know how to use one yet) and it sounded good. The rest of the members at the time told him to continue to bring it.

What is each of your favorite songs to play live?

Aaron- Dive Bar Rockstar

Mike- Funkytown Road and Dive Bar Rockstar

Matt- Funkytown Road

Bill- Funkytown Road

Jabrail- Helluva Week

Who inspires each of you guys?

Aaron-90’s hip hop and R&B

Mike- My family inspire me. I take great pride in being a good father, friend, and husband.

Jabrail- Hip hop/Rap

Bill- Kiss

What is the best piece of advice that you can give to someone who is wanting to start a band?

Aaron-Be careful of who you let around you. Find people who are willing to put in the same amount of work. Don’t let ego’s get in the way. Most importantly, have fun with everything you do. The world is hard enough as it is. Why make something magical like music just as hard as the rest of your life.

Mike- It's a marathon not a sprint. There's no big break. Just many small ones and the way you use them to project yourself. SELF PROMO! DO IT! All the time. All platforms. Make sure you like who you jam with. I'd take a good musician that's an awesome person over a super talented douche bag, any day.

When you’re riding around in an airboat in a swamp, what are the 5 songs you want to have playing?

Mike- Not my fav songs but def need to be played on an airboat... Black Betty - Ram Jam, Free Bird - Lynyrd Skynyrd, Cotton Eye Joe - Rednex. There's probably tons more, haha! My go to's are all over the place. A few to name are: Hard To Handle - Otis Redding, The End Of Heartache - Killswitch Engage, I Am Above - Inflames, Dig - Mudvayne, Cemetery Gates - Pantara,

Aaron- Duke Deuce- Gangsta Party, Sada Baby- Brazy Taxi, Lamb of God- Redneck, Killswitch Engage- A Tribute To The Fallen and My Curse.
