Picasso With The Human Canvas: A Sit Down With Richard Young

When did you start your career as a tattoo artist and how did you decide that tattooing was the career path for you?

I started apprenticing in march of 2017. It was a brisk spring day when I involuntarily left my glamorous life in retail management. While I enjoyed being under the heel of corporate interests and could get another retail gig, I decided to attempt and apply my enjoyment of art and tattoos to a possibly lucrative end. So far things have worked out fairly well, and I can safely say I have a very slight grasp on what I'm doing.

If you had to pick 1 body part that is the most challenging to tattoo what would it be?

So there are still some areas I have not worked on yet, but thus far my least favorite spots are the webbing of the neck where it connects to the shoulder, sides, and the 3x4" area on the backside of the deltoid.

Could you share the most crazy or funny experience you’ve had while tattooing someone?

Oh boy, will without violating anyone's privacy, I'll just say I've had several run ins with people's affinity for losing consciousness and/or control of bodily functions.

There are so many different styles of tattoos, what is your favorite style to tattoo on someone?

I really enjoy doing anime/cartoon tattoos! Been a lifelong anime/cartoon/comic fan so it's always a good time bringing subjects into a tattoo composition

Do you have a favorite tattoo trend at the moment?

Honestly no, aside from the trending acceptance of tattoos in the modern workspace.

Can you share the best piece of advice that you wish you knew when starting your tattoo career?

Oh man, I don't think I can narrow it down to just one. It's been a lot of trial and error and hopefully not as much of the latter. Best bet is to just be confident, and do what you know, and take your time.

Before any clients arrive at the shop, what are 3 songs that you jam while opening?

Ha, I don't have favorite songs, but here are 3 songs I've been jamming lately

BEASTMILK - "Death Reflects Us"

The Cure - "Want"

Azure - "Love is Noise"
